he illumination of manuscripts is the addition of miniature pictures, designs or decorations in gold, silver and brilliant colors drawn or painted on a page of text. Illuminations helped to tell the story and provided visual interest.

In conjunction with the upcoming Village Faire, the Village Library of Wrightstown is sponsoring a contest of an illuminated manuscript page. Illuminated writing is both a text and a visual frame of information and decoration. Both text and pictures form a united composition.

There are many examples and references of this art form at your local library or over the internet. Choose a quote, short poem or passage of scripture to illuminate and frame with corresponding ornamentation.

Winners from each age group will be honored at the Village Renaissance Faire and awarded prizes. Submissions are due at the Wrightstown Library by September 1st.
