A blazon or coat of arms was developed as a way to tell one knight in full armor from another during a battle or tournament. It was important to identify other knights at a glance, so designs were fairly simple. You could tell a lot about  knight by his blazon. The oldest son, for example, would have a castle on his shield. Fighting knights usually had beasts of prey on their shields, while other nobles might have birds or flowers. A shield might be divided with vertical or diagonal bands, and be decorated with stars, crosses or crescents. Only seven colors were ever used in heraldry: yellow (or gold), white (or silver), red, blue, black, green, and purple. You can find more about heraldry and coats of arms at your local library. Have fun designing your own coat of arms to represent yourself or your family using these traditions. Or, use your imagination and make up your own.
